A blade shorter than one shaku is considered a tant? (knife). A blade for a longer period than a single shaku but less than two is considered a sh?t? (small sword). The wakizashi and kodachi are in this classification. The duration is calculated in the straight line through the back again in the blade from idea to munemachi (where blade meets tang)
